We arrived at Jamaica Hospital and Dad was once again assessed. I explained that he was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma. No one at the hospital could believed that he was discharged and allowed to fly. I was just grateful that the Lord was able to bring him to NY.
He was placed in a regular ER waiting bay. I was a bit anxious because I saw my Daddy crashing. He was becoming more incoherent and was getting tired. I approached one of the doctors and explained the situation. She came over to Dad and did a quick neurological check. She saw that something was definitely wrong and grabbed the attending doctor. He ordered a CT scan and I explained the situation again. When Dad came back from the CT scan he was completely out of it. We was not talking and was going in and out of consciousness.
The doctors asked me to look at the CT scan to see if there was a difference in what I saw in Antigua. (Ordinarily, I would have had the CD of the CT scan but the CD burner was not working in Antigua) I told them that the hematoma was larger and was spanning over the entire cerebral hemisphere. I also told them that the mid line shift was more prominent than what I saw previously.
The doctors wanted to know what I did for a living. I told them that I am a Director of School Operations but should have been a doctor.
Soon after I met with the neurosurgeon who informed me that they would need to do the surgery right away. I told them that they had my permission to do what ever they needed to do. Dr. Acefe called another neurosurgeon, Dr. Chen to assist.
The ER nurses where excellent. They inserted a catheter, IV, took bloods, and attended to Dad as if he were family. At 11pm, they prepared Dad for surgery. Dad woke up to tell me that "he loved me." I looked at the doctors and asked them to take care of my Daddy. I told Dad that I loved him.
I then went to the waiting room, prayed and left Dad in God's hands. My husband was able to find me in the waiting room after getting the kids home and settled. We celebrated New Year's Day with a few bags of potato chips, apple juice and water. Just after 2am, Dr. Chen came out to see us and told us that they were finished and that Dad was a bit confused from the surgery and anesthesia but that they were able to remove the blood and blood clots from the brain after doing a craniotomy.
We decided to come back the next day to see Dad as we wanted him to rest.
